Five short films will be shown all made from original stories from children – the theme is ‘horror’ and very spooky some of them are! Two of our directors, Hollywood film director John Irvin (‘Tinker Taylor’ ‘Hamburger Hill’ ‘Turtle Diary’ ‘Mandela’s Gun’) and BBC drama director John Gorrie (‘Doctor Who’ ‘Edward V11’ ‘Morse’) – will be there to answer questions along with the films’ editor George Clemens. Some of the crew and cast will also be there. Any one interested in the business of film making should definitely be there.

Be a part of the second Barnes Film Festival launch evening supported by The European Nature Trust. This year we are privileged to host a Q&A with Steven Moffat, writer and executive producer of BBC’s Sherlock and Dr Who, and Sue Virtue, producer of Mr Bean and Coupling. There will be music from rising star Willow Robinson, as well as a drinks reception and a selection of film shorts.

Star Stuff – the story of Carl Sagan. 10 mins. Directed by Ratimir Rakuljic. A boy who loves stars sets off on a voyage to see what he can discover.

Screening of last year’s 19-25 winner – Perched – directed and introduced by Liam Harris. 9 mins. A submarine commander struggles with lack of rainwater.

Fern Gully  – Crysta is a fairy who lives in Ferngully, a rainforest in Australia, and has never seen a human before. 1hr 16 mins.

A series of beautifully powerful films made by exciting young Black directors about African American artists from this time. For instance, Zawe Ashton directs a film profiling Lorraine O’ Grady an artist whose installations, performances and texts address issues black female subjectivity.  Cecile Emeke is profiling artist and author Faith Ringgold whose paintings and quilted narrative pieces show the racial, political and social tensions she experienced as an artist working in Harlem in the 60s and 70s and Andy Mundy-Castle directs a film profiling painter William T. Williams whose work spans five decade. Finally there will be a fourth film directed by esteemed director Kahlil Joseph (known for working with Beyoncé, Sampha, FKA Twigs and many more) who will be focussing on the works of renowned fine art photographer, Roy DeCarava, who was known for documenting lives of African Americans and jazz artists in Harlem. Collectively the films will elegantly portray the lives and works of these incredible artists.
