Low fish stocks and a nefarious regulatory landscape that favours corporate interests over coastal communities are forcing more and more fishermen out of their livelihood. Our Coast paints a portrait of James’s life as he prepares for the upcoming fishing season and reflects on the experiences along British Columbia’s coast that have shaped the person he is today. James’s goal is twofold: he looks to a future where fishermen can rest assured that their livelihood is secure, and where fish harvesters of all ages and backgrounds are valued for their knowledge of the marine ecosystems that support them.

Samuel Pastor was born in Alicante in 1986. He studied audiovisual production and shows in 2004, since when he has worked as a photographer and creator of audiovisual pieces. He seeks to capture realities in the most natural way possible.

Ella is a natural history film and TV researcher currently based in Vancouver, Canada. In 2019 Ella graduated with a degree specializing in conservation biology and science communication before going on to work in the world of wildlife rehabilitation with MARS Wildlife Rescue in the Comox Valley, also in BC, Canada. In 2021 she completed an MA in Wildlife Filmmaking at the University of the West of England in partnership with the BBC Natural History Unit, where her final thesis film, featuring a young fisherman from Campbell River in Canada, was shortlisted for the BAFTA Student Awards. As a diver raised on Vancouver Island, Ella has a soft spot for marine ecosystems and the communities built around them. She cares most about stories that reflect deep connection to place and explores the human communities at the heart of conservation.

Lidia Bienairz's style and art are based on careful observation of the world and its hidden treasures. Whether fiction or documentary, she believes film is an incredibly important medium that can convey crucial information and knowledge, introducing new perspectives and experience. As a writer and director Lidia makes( films to astonish, but most of all to evoke emotions that we fear and avoid. She hopes this* will force uneasy reflections to emphasise the matter of the values that she believes should be followed in life. Lidia's skills are characterised by thoroughness, total commitment and attention to every little detail. She has won two RTS Awards - in the short film category, and a Lenny Henry Award for the best film. Currently working on short form dramas deepening the topics of injustice, war, childhood trauma and family relations as a writer and director, and occasionally as a production designer.
